Recently visited Somnyama Ngonyama, Hail The Dark Lioness solo exhibition by South Africa based artist Zanele Muholi. Her autobiographic and highly personal portraits showcased her multifaceted art practice. The exhibition features over fifty staged photographs, the artist uses a variety of poses and costumes, combining daily objects drawn from immediate environment. It is really interesting to see how the artist addresses identity, politics and racism in her work, experimenting with different characters and archetypes. I especially enjoy the part of the exhibition where I I feel like indulging in fashion photography, highly stylised with strong visual impact.
